Methodology for evaluating Vietnam's Best Workplaces
For the past 30 years, Great Place To Work® (GPTW) has surveyed employees worldwide regarding their workplace experiences. GPTW has developed a set of themes and metrics that not only predict whether employees feel their workplace is great, but also predict employee retention, flexibility, and overall business success.
Using our proprietary Trust Index™ survey, GPTW measures the core elements we know make great workplaces – the critical behaviors that drive trust in management, connection with colleagues, and loyalty to the company.
The survey allows employees to confidentially share quantitative and qualitative feedback on the organization's culture by answering 60 five-point scale statements and two open-ended questions.
Employees share whether leaders are accessible, communicate honestly and clearly, and whether their actions match their words. They also indicate whether they feel respected as individuals, receive training benefits, appreciation, well-being support, and opportunities to contribute. They let us know whether they believe their company is fair regarding pay, profit, promotions, recognition, bias, and opportunity. They state whether they are proud of their work, team, and company, whether they feel their work is meaningful and makes a difference. And they tell us whether they enjoy working with their colleagues, feel cared for, and can be themselves.
Rankings are based on employee feedback, which we analyze to determine how widely shared this experience is across the entire workforce. GPTW measures differences in survey responses across demographic groups and roles within each organization to assess both the quality and consistency of the employee experience. Statements are ranked based on their relevance in describing the most critical aspects of a fair workplace.
The best companies create great work experiences not just for management, but also for frontline part-time workers, newcomers as well as those who have spent their entire careers there, for every race and ethnicity, gender, neurotype, or other demographic in the organization – we look at it all. Companies with the broadest numbers of employees reporting positive workplace experiences receive the highest rankings on the lists.
In addition to analyzing employee feedback for the 2024 GPTW Vietnam list, GPTW also examines what a company can share with us about their workplace programs and strategies. Each company also answers six essay questions that provide deeper insight into how and why their organization is a great place to work for all. The responses are rigorously evaluated and cross-checked against GPTW's research criteria. From the data and essays shared by companies, GPTW identifies organizations that offer the most generous, thoughtful, and innovative programs, reflecting a sincere commitment to meeting the diverse needs of employees both in and outside the workplace, validated by what employees self-report in the survey results.
Surveys must adhere to strict requirements regarding distribution methods and employee response rates to ensure they accurately reflect the genuine opinions of the entire company population. Although essay responses provide important context for the rankings, only survey data can determine a company’s position on the list. Over the past year, GPTW surveyed companies with more than 135,000 employees in Vietnam and received more than 125,000 survey responses.
